Four French proposals for Enemalta
by David Kelleher
Major French energy companies are showing strong interest in the privatisation of Enemalta and four proposals have already been presented to the government, Didier Destremau, France's Ambassador in Malta, told The Malta Business Weekly. Mr Destremau was speaking to The Malta Business Weekly on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the setting up of the Maltese-French Chamber of Commerce.
The French Ambassador said that the government's plans to privatise State companies, in particular in the telecommunications and energy sectors, have generated a lot of interest among French companies.
"There is a lot of interest from French companies EDF and ELF in Enemalta and its various divisions. In fact, they have presented the government four proposals," Mr Destremau said.
The French Ambassador said Malta had a lot to offer to French entrepreneurs, although he admitted that business circles in France knew very little about the island.
"The image the French have of Malta is that of a 'paradise' perfect for tourists, a rich cultural heritage and little else. French entrepreneurs are not aware that Malta has its own industry. They are not aware either of the island's quality of education," Mr Destremau said.
"It is not only a question of having top quality manufacturers but the brains behind the industry are as important, and Malta has the trained and skilled manpower," he added.
Mr Destremau said the Maltese-French Chamber of Commerce could do a great deal to foster better business links between Malta and France.
"I propose that it links up with other Chambers in France to develop further the ties between the two countries. There has to be more harmony between the Chamber, the embassy and our trade mission and we must learn to work together and adapt to each other's needs and intentions," he said.
