Major changes soon in Maltacom's top management

by Franco Aloisio

The post of general manager at Maltacom plc will cease to exist as from January following major changes which are to be implemented by the end of the year within the company, sources close to Maltacom said yesterday.

The position of general manager, currently occupied by Joseph R. Azzopardi, will be replaced by that of a chief executive officer. Furthermore, five deputy CEOs will be appointed by January, the sources said yesterday.

At present, lobbying for these posts is rife within the company, and this was evident during yesterday's Maltacom Christmas reception. A call for applications for these posts will be issued very soon.

The idea of Maltacom having a management structure including five deputy CEOs was proposed by several executives of the company.

Former Maltacom chief executive Anthony Debono and the present assistant finance manager, Stephen Muscat, are considered the front-runners for the post of CEO.

Meanwhile the government is still seeking a strategic partner for Maltacom. As was revealed by The Malta Independent on Sunday on 14 November, the Swedish company LM Ericsson is still considered the front-runner in the race for Maltacom's strategic partner. Other foreign companies such as Cable and Wireless, Bell and AT&T are also actively competing in this race.
