Initiatives in the leisure industry to be encouraged

by David Kelleher

Initiatives in the leisure industry are to be encouraged because this sector was one of the fastest growing, Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami said on Tuesday.

He was speaking at the official launch of the latest fad in entertainment - Badger Karting. The initiative has been a huge success and hundreds of young and the not-so-young have been attracted to this new leisure activity, according to Andrew Borg, the brainchild behind the idea.

"The idea has been received very well and we have nearly closed booking for December. We are very pleased with the feedback," Mr Borg told The Malta Business Weekly.

Badger Karting is a joint venture between the Pater Group and Badger Co. Ltd, aimed at increasing activities for Maltese and tourists who visit the island.

"The idea was conceived nearly two years ago with the intention of providing a fun, exciting, competitive and safe activity," Mr Borg said.

Prime Minister Dr Eddie Adami said similar initiatives had to be encouraged because the leisure industry was one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy.

"This industry not only helps to improve the people's lives, but it is also a money earner. It attracts not only locals but also those who spend some time living with us. Such initiatives also provide added employment," Dr Fenech Adami said.

The track, designed with the help of Jonathan Williams of Williams Grand Prix, is nearly 700 metres in length with three track options. Safety is paramount and every precaution has been taken to ensure that customers are safe.

"Anyone wishing to drive a kart must wear a racesuit and a helmet and before going onto the track, every customer is given a briefing during which the rules are explained," Mr Borg said.

Badger Karting is the latest expression of karting in the Mediterranean and the local raceway has 30 of the latest electro-powered karts. These can reach speeds of up to 60km/h, which when combined with the twists and turns in the track, deliver a perfect blend of thrill and adrenaline. Customers can also relax and enjoy other people racing on the track. A clubhouse is available with a bar offering hot and cold snacks and a variety of drinks. The roof of the building has been designed as a viewing gallery.

Various challenges are organised and competitions with prizes are planned for January. A junior club is also being set up.

The Badger Karting raceway is open to the public from Monday to Friday, between 4pm and 11pm, and Saturday and Sunday and on public holidays, between 9am to 11pm.
