Chief Executive of UK Design Council to address business breakfast

by a staff reporter

The chief executive of the Design Council of the United Kingdom, Andrew Summers, is to address a business breakfast organised by The Malta Business Weekly and Le Meridien Phoenicia Hotel on 17 February.

Mr Summers' visit is also co-sponsored by the British High Commission and British Airways. The Design Council represents the UK design industry which covers a range of disciplines, mainly graphics, industrial design and architectural design. According to a 1998 survey for the Design Council, international purchasing managers ranked British design capabilities within the top six worldwide.

Britain has an international reputation particularly in the areas of retail interior/exterior, branding, advertising, corporate identity, product design and multi media. Mr Summers, who will speak on "Design for the new millennium", has a background in general management, innovation and international marketing in both the private and public sectors. Since becoming chief executive of the UK Design Council he has been responsible for redirecting and rejuvenating this government- backed body which inspires the best use of design by business, education and government in the UK. Millennium Products and Creative Britain have been high profile activities over the last two years.

From 1991 Mr Summers was chief executive of the Management Charter Initiative, and developed MCI as the industry/government body promoting best practice in management throughout the UK. His industrial experience has spanned over 20 years and was in the food industry, where he was managing director of Sharwood's, responsible for designing and developing the company's speciality food ranges in UK and international markets, and then managing director of RHM Foods. He maintains his involvement in the food industry by being a non-executive director of S. Daniels pie. He is a board member of British Trade International and chairman of the DTI European Trade Committee.

Mr Summers will be delivering his speech in the newly refurbished ballroom of Le Meridien Phoenicia
