New FOI president elected

At a Federation of Industry council meeting held on 28 February 2000, Joseph Zammit Tabona was elected President of the FOI. Mr Zammit Tabona has been on the FOI council since 1986 and was previously President during 1990-1991.

The full FOI council for the year 2000 includes a new deputy president, Dr André J. Camilleri; four vice-presidents, namely Helga Ellul, Godwin C. Micallef, Ian J. Mizzi, and Anton Borg; and members Henry Attard, Adrian Bajada, Joe Caruana Curran, Joseph Cortis, Andy Gatesy, Gene E. Gretchen, Joseph Montebello, Joseph L. Pace and Charles Rapa.

Four of these, Henry Attard, Adrian Bajada, Joseph Cortis and Joseph Montebello are new faces on the FOI council, while Anton Borg and Ian Mizzi are serving for the first time as vice-presidents.

Mr Zammit Tabona was articled with Turquand Youngs & Co. in London and qualified as a chartered accountant in 1971. Mr Zammit Tabona became partner of the local branch of Turquand Young & Co. in 1972 and at present is a partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Mr Zammit Tabona is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, a fellow of the Malta Institute of Accountants, an associate member of the Institute of Taxation and also has a warrant to practise as a certified public accountant and auditor.

Mr Zammit Tabona was President of the Malta Federation of Industry during 1990 and 1991. He was first elected to the council of the Malta Federation of Industry in 1980.

He was honorary Treasurer of the federation in 1980 and 1988. He has also served the federation in other posts such as chairman of the Economic Affairs Committee and as a member of the Legal and Statute Committee.

During the time he was President of the Malta Federation of Industry, he also served as a member of the board of directors of the Malta Export Trade Corporation and a member of the Malta Council for Economic Development.

Mr Zammit Tabona was a member of the board of directors of the Bank of Valletta Limited from 4 May 1992 to 19 December 1997. During the time he was a director of the bank. He was a member of the Bank's Finance Committee and was chairman of the Compliance Committee from August 1992 to August 1995 and chairman of the Purchasing Committee between September 1995 and December 1997.

His experience in public practice and his active involvement in the federation's affairs in recent years have created a deep understanding of the needs of all sectors of local industry.

He was President of the Association of Round Tables (Malta) in 1978/1979 and held various other international positions, eventually becoming President of the World Council of Young Men's Service Clubs in 1983/1984. He also served as a council member of the local Institute of Accountants from 1974 to 1984.
