Encouraging forecast for summer tourism
by Franco Aloisio
Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) President Joe Preca said that whilst this winter's tourism performance was rather weak, the forecast for next summer is encouraging.
Speaking during MHRA's extraordinary general meeting on Tuesday, Mr Preca said forward bookings from Malta's core markets is showing a marked increase for next summer.
"Hopefully this will detract the need for discounts and special offers during the peak season, and subsequently should render better financial results," he said.
He warned that several local agents have not yet settled invoices pertaining to last summer. Mr Preca added that this is totally unacceptable. The worst culprits seem to be the representatives of some East European tour operators.
"A word of caution goes to all our members dealing with these markets. It would be beneficial to impose strict payment conditions, should indications for the future months prove realistic."
Mr Preca announced that progress has been achieved regarding a code of practice which is to be soon endorsed between the MHRA and the Association for Incoming Travel Agents. This agreement is based on a similar one existing between travel agents and hotels in Europe.
He said also that it is expected that the annual contributions due by hotels and restaurants to the Malta Tourism Authority will soon be subject to an increase.
Mr Preca also said that a recent initiative undertaken by the MHRA is the setting up of a new web-site, incorporating all hotel beds available at any time. Clients in the near future would be capable of making an on-line booking directly and immediately. At the same time hotels will have direct access to the web-site and be in a position to adjust and control both the accommodation available and at what rate they desire to sell their rooms.
