Eminent arbitration lawyers appointed to Malta Arbitration Centre

The Malta Arbitration Centre has set up an International Arbitral Advisory Committee in accordance with Section 10 (4) of the Arbitration Act.

This committee has the function to advise the centre on any matter relating to international commercial arbitration and to recommend to the centre persons, who in its opinion, are qualified to carry out the duties and functions of arbitrators in international commercial arbitrations.

It also recommends the appointment of panels of arbitrators for international commercial arbitration on matters such as international trade, commerce, insurance, investment and the maritime sector.

The International Arbitral Advisory Committee is headed by the chairman of the Malta Arbitration Centre, Prof. David Attard and is composed of the following eminent lawyers:

Dr Abdel Hamid El-Ahdab, secretary general of the Euro-Arab Association for International Arbitration.

Prof. Giorgio Bemini, Onorario dell'Università di Bologna.

Ulfe Franke, secretary general of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA).

Dr Gerold Hermann, secretary, UNCITRAL, Vienna.

Judge Howard M. Holtzmann, counsellor at law, New York.

R.A. Karrer, President Swiss Arbitration Association, Zurich.

Ahmed S. El-Kosheri, vice-president of the International Chamber of Commerce Commission on International Commercial Arbitration and Attorney at Law, Cairo.

Prof. Hamzeh Haddad, assistant secretary of the Arab International Arbitration Union, former Minister of Justice, Jordan.

Sergei Lebedev of the Maritime Arbitration Commission of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Moscow.

Prof. Umberto Leanza, head of the Legal and Treaties Department of the Italian Foreign Ministry.

Dr Werner Melis, chairman, International Arbitral Centre of the Federal Economic Chamber, Vienna.

Dr Ugo Mifsud Bonnici, former President of the Republic of Malta.

Jan Paulsson, vice-president of the London Court of International Arbitration.

Prof. F.M.B. Reynolds, Professor of Law, Worcester College, Oxford.

H.H. Dr Joseph Said Pullicino, Chief Justice, Malta.

Jernej Sekolec, senior legal officer, UNCITRAL, Vienna.

Prof. Frank L. Wiswall, vice-president Comitée Maritime International, USA.

Prof. Attard in a statement expressed his satisfaction at the support which the centre has received from eminent lawyers and arbitration specialists from major jurisdictions as well as from Gerold Herrmann, secretary of NCITRAL which is working closely with the centre in its quest to attract international arbitration to Malta.

The chairman of the Malta Arbitration Centre also pointed out the support received from a number of prominent Arab arbitration lawyers as this augurs well for the centre's desire to attract Middle East arbitration to Malta.
