Malta Capital Markets Group set up
by Noel Grima
The development of the Capital Market in Malta has highlighted the necessity of public awareness on capital market issues.
With this in mind a number of professionals with an academic interest in capital markets have established the Malta Capital Markets Group.
This initiative has been pioneered by Paul V. Azzopardi, Dr Louis de Gabriele, Dr Arthur Galea Salomone, Dr Max Ganado, Alfred Mallia, Wilfred Mallia, Kevin Valenzia and Tonio Zarb.
The objectives of the group are to disseminate information relating to the Capital Market and to promote educational initiatives in this regard.
Speaking at the launch, Mr Mallia said this group is independent and has no link with any other organisation.
Each person on the panel is there on a personal basis: they are all professionals in the financial field and they often meet on professional business and discuss what is happening in the field.
They thought of organising this group so as to be a platform to hold meetings and discuss the problems which are common to the sector.
The meetings, which will be periodic, will air the issues and the problems as they are felt by the people engaged professionally in the sector as well by the public at large.
Through such discussions, it is hoped, a general sensitivity will be built on the issues as perceived by all the players in the field and consensus built on the changes which must take place.
The group is non-profitable and has initially secured a nominal sponsorship from the Malta Stock Exchange which actively supports educational initiatives relating to capital markets issues.
The Malta Capital Market Group plans to organise discussions and/or seminars which will be open to the general public, as well as to commission and publish articles of relevance to the development of the local capital market.
The first activity organised by The Malta Capital Market Group will be a public discussion on Market Abuse (moderator of the discussion Dr de Gabriele) and The Role of the Financial Media (moderator of the discussion Paul V. Azzopardi).
The discussion will be held at Le Meridien Phoenicia, on 30 May at 3pm. The public is invited to attend. Entry is free of charge.
