Three year contract for Medelec in Libya

by Franco Aloisio

The US$60m contract won recently by the Malta-based switchgear company Medelec Company Limited will span over a three year period, industry sources have said.

The contract, announced last month during the signing of an agreement between Finance Minister John Dalli and Libyan Deputy Prime Minister Abu Janah, is considered as one of the biggest ever signed between the two countries.

Sources said Medelec will supply and install electricity substations and switching devices to Libya. The three-year contract is expected to contribute significantly to the upgrading of Libya's electrical infrastructure.

This is not the first contract won by Medelec in Libya but it is the largest ever won by the company following an international call for tenders.

Medelec was jointly set up in 1977 by Maltese, Libyan and British shareholders. The company has seen substantial investments over the years undertaken to enhance and develop its manufacturing base and facilities with the creation of fabrication operations and product design facilities.

Starting off just as an assembly base for 11KV switchgear, Medelec has since grown into the largest manufacturing company on the island in the electrical field. To continue developing the manufacturing the services sector, Medelec has invested in a more highly skilled labour force and in latest automated equipment with the determined objective of expanding its role as a leading, reliable manufacturer of high-quality electrical equipment.

Medelec offers a wide range of products benefiting those customers that require a specific range of electrical equipment with quality safeguards towards its customers. The company manufactures, supplies, installs and commissions a large number of high-quality distribution equipment mainly to the northern region of Africa.

The company's close association with renowned manufacturers of high voltage distribution equipment from Britain, Sweden, Germany and Belgium has resulted in giving a high-quality equipment package together with first-class service to its customers.

Although the company has its own product range to offer, due to its close collaboration with the major European suppliers, Medelec provides equipment outside its ranges with the only scope in mind to meet customers' specific requirements.
