Another first at Saint James Hospital

Digital EEG examinations

Saint James Hospital has just set up a comprehensive Neurology Department which comprises an EMG and state-of-the-art digital EEG equipment. The department is responsible for providing clinical services in the areas of adult neurology and paediatric neurology.

"EMG" stands for Electromyogram which loosely translated means electrical testing of muscles but in fact has come to mean electrical testing of nerves and muscles. EEG is the "Gold Standard" investigation in patients suspected of having epileptic seizures. It is indicated in all patients having suffered any episode of altered consciousness. This applies to all age groups, from neonates to geriatric patients.

Patients may be referred by their general practitioner/ specialist accompanied by a brief medical history of the patient.

The investigation is totally non invasive and each investigation last between 45 minutes to an hour depending on each individual case and patient being investigated. The EEG equipment is operated by an experienced neurophysiologist with the results being interpreted by the hospital's neurologists. The equipment is the latest, state-of-the-art in digital technology. The record is reported within 24 hours or sooner in cases of emergency.

The EEG recording is stored on hard disc for long-term storage. Patients may be given a copy of their results on a CD and results may also be e-mailed to the referring doctor. In the case of young children or disturbed patients, sedation may be necessary and in such cases the hospital should be advised accordingly.
