Call for use of cheaper, cleaner
fuels

The Association of Car Importers has called on the government to implement the structures necessary for vehicles to run on fuels which are cheaper or cleaner, or both, in the light of the rising cost of traditional fuels.
The ACIM said that a step in the right direction “seems to be the bill providing for the establishment of the Malta Resources Authority, introduced by Dr Francis Zammit Dimech, minister for the environment.
Among other things, the association said, this authority is
designated as the regulator of activities and operations related to energy, water and mineral resources. As such it should be in a position to authorise the introduction and distribution of “new” fuels such as the electric power and liquid petroleum gas, which is used in more than one million vehicles in Italy.
“These options are available in several EU countries and there should not, therefore, be any question as to whether
their usage meets the relevant EU directives. Meanwhile,
in Malta it is not yet possible
to road licence a light vehicle that is already converted to
run on these fuels,” the ACIM said.
