Yes campaign to be launched on Saturday

by Anthony Manduca

The “Yes” campaign for Malta’s membership of the European Union is to be officially launched on Saturday with the birth of the Iva Malta fl-Ewropa (Yes to Malta in Europe) lobby group during a press conference.
The coordinator of the new organisation is Dr Austin Bencini, a lawyer, while a number of spokespersons have been appointed to speak on behalf of the lobby group. These are Louis Farrugia, chief executive of Simonds Farsons Cisk, Dr Alec Lapira, a family doctor, Dr Joanna Drake, an expert in European law, Prof. Kenneth Wain, an academic and university lecturer and Dr Joseph Chetcuti, a lawyer. David Casa is the secretary of the “Yes” campaign group.
Dr Bencini is expected to announce the group’s first event which will be held in the following week and which will consist of a mass activity in Valletta open to the general public. A festive atmosphere is expected to be created during this public event.
Sources have told The Malta Business Weekly that the “Yes” lobby has made a effort to reach out to all the different sectors of Maltese society such as the self-employed, tradesmen, farmers, fishermen, youths, businessmen, professionals, academics, workers, trade unionists and popular personalities from the media and entertainment field.
The “Yes” lobby is seen by many observers as an important tool in convincing the electorate to vote in favour of Malta joining the European Union in the country’s upcoming referendum. Dr Bencini will be addressing a press conference on the launch of Iva Malta fl-Ewropa on Saturday at 10am at the Phoenicia Hotel.
