Making tourism work for Malta

The second annual conference of the Malta Tourism Authority will be held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta on 30 November. The main theme for this conference is “Making Tourism Work for Malta. One year on: What progress, what future”?
Commenting on the past year, MTA chairman Dr John C. Grech said: “Undoubtedly, the publication of the MTA strategic plan for the years 2000-2002 was of paramount importance both for the Authority itself as well as for the Maltese tourism industry, primarily since it has provided an instrument which enables our work to be evaluated, monitored and by means of which we can be held accountable.”
The conference will provide the opportunity for the MTA to report back to its stakeholders on the MTA’s first year of operations, with specific reference to the implementation of the strategic plan.
Local and foreign speakers will address the conference on issues that are of relevance to the Maltese tourism industry. This year’s programme also includes workshops which will be focusing on the marketing and promotion, product planning and development and human resources dimensions of the industry.
The conference schedule is devised to enable meaningful discussion to unfold and contributions made during the workshops in particular are meant to be integrated in MTA’s plans.
“Although the conference and the accompanying exhibition by the different directorates will centre on the MTA, its plans and achievements, it must be made clear that the task of making tourism work for Malta cannot rest solely on the Authority,” said Dr Grech. “The MTA is there to act as a catalyst and facilitator to enable Malta’s success in tourism but the end result depends upon all the industry’s stakeholders: government, the private sector and the individual.”
