What was the partnership?

Since 2022, Parkinson’s UK and Everyone Active have been on a shared mission to make physical activity more accessible for people living with Parkinson’s.

The condition has more than 40 symptoms, and research has shown that regular physical activity can be transformative.

What did it do?

As a company that wants to encourage everyone to exercise more, partnering with Parkinson’s UK was a natural fit for gym operator Everyone Active.

There are about 153,000 people living with the condition in the UK, but with the cost-of-living crisis many could not afford a gym membership.

Parkinson’s UK and Everyone Active drew up an agreement offering a complimentary membership to anyone diagnosed. This also covered carers, entitling them to a free membership across any of 200 sites in England.

On top of this, staff at Everyone Active sites were trained to become Parkinson’s-aware to ensure they could support those attending in the best way possible. A buddy scheme was also introduced so that an existing member with Parkinson’s would be there to welcome and support new members on their first visit.

What were the results?

The partnership has been hugely successful to date, with 2,872 people with Parkinson’s taking up the offer of gym membership and 1,181 carers enjoying free access to exercise.

It is directly benefiting hundreds of lives of people with Parkinson’s and these numbers should grow as the partnership develops further.

What did the judges say?

“Great partnership working at a local and national level. The free membership scheme is only the tip of the iceberg of what the partnership does.”

Highly commended
